The Sarigua Desert in Herrera

Sarigua Desert is located in Herrera one of the provinces in the Azuero Peninsula of Panama. The Sarigua Desert National Park consists of 8000 hectares and has salted land because there was an ocean in that area thousands of years ago.

In some parts of the Sarigua Desert you can find mangroves and small lakes.

Sarigua Desert is a dry but it gets rain from time to time and various types of vegetation live in the area such as desert plants and cacti. Right now there is a reforestation plan in this area. Mangroves were used as a balance to maintain the ecosystem of this area but when humans became involved most of the mangroves and the trees began to disappear and the desert began to expand by removing most vegetation in the area.

Sarigua Desert is not considered by many a desert, is it an area that received a massive salinization process, which is considered an Albina area that is influenced by tides that keeps the salt in the soil. Wildlife found in this area is a bit strange and varied, it consists of small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and over one hundred and sixty two types of migratory birds. In the mangroves you can find different types of marine life such as mollusks, crustaceans and fish.

Sarigua’s climate is considered tropical savanna with a rainy season and dry season, the dry season runs from December to April and rainy season from May to November.

Sarigua contains remains and artifacts of an 11,000 old farming community. This area was inhabited and thriving when North America was under a mile of ice in the last ice age!
