The Gardens at Red Frog Bungalows are 4 years old now. When the gardens were started there was nothing. Now, there are many exotic haliconias, plumerias, gardenias, palms, pineapples, mountain apples, and hibiscus. Which are producing large amounts of flowers. Not only do they smell good but the nectar produced in the flowers attracts large amounts of Butterflies and Hummingbirds. One of the regulars to the garden is The Blue Morpho. This butterfly is one of the most exotic in the world. The hummingbirds are also very abundant.
Panama has 59 species of hummingbirds. The most in the world. The Garden at Red Frog Bungalows has created a perfect nesting area for Hummingbirds. The Green Breasted Mango Hummingbird is the most prolific. There are constantly nests and hatchlings on the property. At Red Frog Bungalows you will see many of the species just sitting on your patios. Parrots, oropendolas, seahawks, woodpeckers, and pelicans are a few of the other hundreds that have been identified in the area.
The resort has an abundance of Strawberry Dart Frogs (Dendrobates Pumilio). Also known as Red Frogs. The resort has created a sanctuary for these frogs by planting many different bromeliads. The females will use this plant to place their eggs on the leaves or in the axil. Once the eggs hatch, the water in the axil of the bromeliad is essential for the tadpoles. They can been seen and heard throughout the day. This genetic variety (color) can be found only on Bastimentos Island. Nowhere else in the World!
