Portobelo National Park

You will find many activities in the sprawling Portobelo National Park covering 86,106 acres (34,846 hectares) of tropical rainforests. You can plan hiking historic sites along the El Camino Real, or exploring the16th century storehouses for remnants of the gold and silver once stored there. Bird watching is said to be remarkable in the National Park, but there are rivers, a zip line, and animal trails of all sorts throughout the forest to explore.

The Caribbean Sea offers lots of things to do. It’s filled with bright coral reefs and their myriad marine communities to visit. Many divers consider there are more than 15 dive sites of interest along this coastline. Amis the amazing schools of neon colored fish, some divers talk of the best coral reef dives on the Caribbean coast. You can visit the vestiges of the original pirates of the Caribbean, in and around the skeletal remains of many ships hulls resting on the bottom of Portobelo Bay. Too, surfing, sailing, wind-surfing, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and walking the shore lines will offer many hours of pleasure for you and your family.

Visiting the city of Portobelo is a walk back in time, you will imagine some of the ancient stories of the people who have lived here for the last five hundred years. Portobelo offers forts and counting houses and there are parts of the El Camino Real is still visible through the rainforest.

The fortifications that are conserved surrounding the Portobelo Cove were named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1980. The Fort of San Lorenzo, the Trench, the Fort of Santiago and the Castle of San Felipe, are preserved in the Historical Monumental Set of Portobelo, and you can tour those areas by yourselves or with a local guide.
