Less than an hour from the urban climes of Panama City you will find a legendary people and their increasingly legendary Ambassador, Anne Gordon de Barrigon.
While in Panama working on the critically acclaimed adventure drama “The End of the Spear”, an American named Anne Gordon met and fell in love with one of the movie’s indigenous actors.
She has remained in Panama in the years since and is now actively involved with preserving the history and culture of the Embera people.
When you visit Panama, you can spend a day with the Embera under the tutelage of Anne Gordon.
This is an extraordinary adventure filled with stories of Panama as it once was, and a walk through the natural wonders of this amazing nation as it is seen through the eyes of its indigenous people.
It is important to remember that the Embera are proud to live much as they have for hundreds of years. They work very hard to preserve their remarkable way of life. It is a privilege to be allowed an inside look at their world. This said, your time with the Embara will begin when Anne meets you at your hotel for a conversation about how to prepare for your adventure before setting foot on Embera land.
If you would like to discover the ancient Embera you will need the help of a local travel professional. Why come this far without making the best of your time and treasure?
A brief description of the tour:
The tour starts around 8:30 am when Anne goes to pick you up at your hotel. You drive for about an hour to the boat ramp and are met by the dugout canoe, then you travel up river for about 45 min. and arrive at the village, where we are greeted by traditional music and given free roam of the village to explore and take pictures. You go on a short hike through the jungle to learn about medicinal plants the tribe uses.
Then upon arrival back in the Embera village we are giving a traditional lunch of fish or chicken and patacones (plantains). Then you are given an explanation of their culture, crafts and how they live and are then treated to more music and to watch some traditional dances. After some shopping time to purchase any crafts you might want we get back in the dugout and head down river and back to your hotel. All and all an unforgettable day!
Anne normally takes you to her husband’s village which is in the Chagres National Park and on the rio San Juan de Pequeni.

Me gustaria ser parte de los guias
My husband and I enjoyed the Embera trip with Anne Gordon. It was the best time we had in Panama City, and well worth the cost. We will take other family and friends on this adventure so they can too see the beauty of the Embera peoples and their culture. Thank you Anne for a wonderful journey!
