Las Clementinas Hotel in Casco Viejo

Located at the heart of Casco Viejo, Las Clementinas Hotel is an intimate hotel set within an urban oasis.

Las Clementinas six chambers–each truly an apartment unto itself–are unmatched in Panama City, and the rooftop terrace is unique in the historic district for its breathtaking views of Panama City, the Pacific Ocean, Ancon Hill and the entrance to the Panama Canal.

About the Hotel – A message from the owners…

When we first went inside Las Clementinas in 2007, we had only a vague idea how wonderful a property it was. Clearly her façade was majestic and her gardens, with their twin 50-year-old 80-foot-tall palm trees and remnants of the old city wall, called our attention.  We knew a bit of the history–how the gardens had been deed protected for the “embellishment of the city” and had ultimately been lost to foreclosure in the mid 20th century–but it wasn’t until we had spent six months cleaning away decades of debris that we truly understood that the building that the family of Sra. Clementina Herrera built in 1930 was one of Casco Antiguo’s masterpieces.

After three years of work, we are proud to announce the public opening of Las Clementinas Chambers, Café and Bar. Because her structural bones were intact, we were able to maintain the same distribution as Doña Clementina’s apartment building, which means that each of Las Clementinas chambers is really an apartment unto itself, with great space, light and views. While the spaces have kept their classic feel, and many of the common area historic finishes were recovered, the chamber interiors have been re-built completely with all modern comforts.

We took special care in finishing and furnishing the property, finding artisans in Colombia who could reproduce Doña Clementina’s hand-painted tiles and scouring Panama in search of pieces of history, from heirlooms abandoned by aristocratic families to antique desks from the old British Embassy. And what we couldn’t find, we had built in our shop using 80-year-old Florida Pine that we reclaimed from the beams of old US Army barracks on the Caribbean side of the Canal.

We hope that you will fall in love with Las Clementinas as we have, and we know that you will find the service to be on par with the service to which you have become accustomed at Canal House.

Clementinas Spaces

Café & Bar

Like all the great hotels of old, Las Clementinas’ lobby Café and Bar is a place for travelers and locals to dine and meet. The menu is best described as Panamanian classics lovingly updated and made with care–the kind of comfort food that foreigners fall in love with when they visit and Panamanians crave when they travel.

Each dish–from risotto con coco to ropa vieja–has been researched and refined to perfection by Chef Javier Lamarca, who has created Panamanian food as it was meant to be, using fresh, local ingredients, many of which come right from Las Clementinas garden!

But the Café and Bar are only the beginning. Panama’s most exotic dining experience awaits in Las Clementinas secret garden. After decades of being hidden from view, a forgotten garden was discovered thirty feet below street level nestled into the historic city wall. Now restored, the garden provides the setting for unique, intimate private dinners and events.

Las Clementinas is a place that doesn’t reveal itself all at once. Each space has its own charm and secrets, giving guests something new to discover each time they return.

Palm Garden

Deeded over one hundred years ago “for the conservation and embellishment of the city” Las Clementinas’ Palm Garden is a cozy urban oasis planted with exotic fruits and herbs from throughout the region, many of which are used in the Cafe’s dishes.

Secret Garden and Private Dining Room

Nearly two stories below street level, nestled against the remains of the old fort wall is a mossy garden that had remained hidden from the city for many decades. If the Palm Garden is an oasis, then the Secret Garden is the hidden spring at its center–an ideal location to host family gatherings and small weddings and corporate events in Panama. The private dining room in the Secret Garden is ideal for seated formal dinners of up to 16 in air conditioning, or larger groups with open air seating in the Secret Garden.

Roof Terrace

Las Clementinas most exclusive space is its roof terrace. It is open to hotel guests 24 hours.  Fridays, non-hotel guests with dinner reservations may enjoy a cocktail on the terrace while waiting for their table between 6 pm and 8 pm.  The Las Clementinas roof terrace is one of the few places in Casco Viejo where you can see Panama City’s skyline, Ancon Hill and the entrance to the Panama Canal. Please note that there is no elevator, so reaching the roof terrace requires climbing four flights of of stairs.

Chambers

As intimate and as it is comfortable, Las Clementinas offers what may be Panama’s finest rooms in its most exciting location, Casco Viejo. Located in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, just steps from some of Latin America’s most important historical monuments, the hotel caters to travelers who search out unique properties with a distinct sense of place.

Las Clementinas was originally built in the 1930s as an apartment building, and we have retained the original apartments’ layouts, giving our rooms unmatched size and volumes. Think of it as a classic small European hotel with much larger rooms, gracious finishes and no elevator.

As an intimate boutique hotel, it strives to offer a level of personalized service that larger properties simply cannot match.  Having catered to visiting dignitaries, executives and celebrities, the staff is accustomed to making the seemingly impossible happen.
