A warm welcome awaits you at La Estancia Bed and Breakfast. Nestled in the quiet hillside of Cerro Ancon with views to the Bridge of the Americas, the B&B is close to the domestic airport, old town Casco Viejo, the Panama Canal, Amador Causeway, and only 10 minutes from the heart of Panama City.

“La Estancia is one of Panama City’s most charming B&B’s.” —Lonely Planet

“La Estancia is the finest, proper bed and breakfast in Panama.” —Bradt Panama Guide

At La Estancia—a non-smoking B&B—you are also surrounded by nature. Making it your refuge in the city, a place for bird watchers as well as nature lovers who enjoy wakening to the sound of birds.

Upon rising, go to one of the balconies for a hearty home-cooked breakfast, which includes eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, and delicious pancakes, as well as a selection of fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, cheese, fruit juices and bread. Also, throughout the day, complimentary tea, coffee and fruit are available for guests.

Free high-speed Wi-Fi Internet connections or 24-hour access to a “house” computer are available for guests.

After a short 20-minute walk to the top of Cerro Ancon, guests will enjoy a 360°-view of Panama City and the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks. On your walk around Cerro Ancon, you may also see, in the thick and unspoiled vegetation, monkeys, exotic birds, deer, sloths and many other kinds of animals unique to this area.

During your stay, enjoy shopping and sight-seeing as well as easy and fast access to downtown. B&B La Estancia is just a few minutes away from most of the popular tourist spots in the city, and all shopping, eating, business and financial districts. Only five minutes from Albrook airport, and minutes from all public transportation terminals. La Estancia B&B is within walking distance of the cultural center, Mi Pueblito where you can see replica houses of the various regions of Panama, including houses from San Blas, Darien, Bocas del Toro and the old Spanish houses of the Los Santos area.

So, as you can see, B&B La Estancia is an ideal base for people who wish either to spend time in the city, explore the beauty and fascination of Panama, or have a base for overnight excursions. Or all of the above! Be assure that there is no one else in Panama who can match the quality of hospitality at La Estancia.

B&B La Estancia is located on the prominent Ancon Hill in Panama City. The hill, which rises 654 feet above the bay at its foot, has been a key Panamanian geographical reference point for nearly 400 years. This is due to its proximity to Panama City and its commanding 360-degree view encompassing the Pacific ocean approach to the Isthmus of Panama and the Panamanian hinterland seven to ten miles to the west, east, and north. There are views from the top, overlooking the Panama Canal and the City, that cannot be equaled on the isthmus.

Bird and Wildlife

Wildlife abounds around La Estancia. Sloths and monkeys often visit in the trees just outside your balcony—at eye-level! Usually, during breakfast, hummingbirds put on quite a show as they swoop in to drink from the feeders. Be sure to allow time during your stay to just sit and enjoy the nature that surrounds you.

History

In 1674, the new city of Panama (Casco Viejo), was laid out on a cove at the base of Ancon Hill. Two hundred years later, the French Canal Company selected the hillside, which overlooked the roadstead, as the site of its hospital. Later, when the United States took control, they used the name, “Port of Ancon,” for what would later be the Pacific terminus of the Panama Canal.

In 1904, after the U.S. took over the rights and properties of the French Canal Company, American officials thought the crown of Ancon Hill was a perfect location for housing and two sanitariums. They faced the problem, however, of creating a feasible way to reach the hilltop.

They considered a regular railway, a cog railway, a cable railway, and finally a macadam road with a stage running at frequent intervals. All these ideas were discarded, however, because of the expense. Finally, they abandoned the idea of a summit site and settled their town on the lower slopes of the hill.

The United States maintained a constant military presence in Panama between 1903 and 1999. Beginning in 1920, Ancon Hill was the nerve center for U.S. Military forces in Panama; then in 1947, for all U.S. Forces deployed in the Southern Theater. Transferred to the Army by the Panama Canal Commission in 1914, Ancon Hill also served as a troop encampment, military police post, and senior officer housing area—access was restricted.

Today, Cerro Ancon (Ancon Hill) is a nature preserve, where birds, small animals—like monkeys, sloth and deer—can be seen. On the top of the hill, a huge Panamanian flag flies over a national park, where there are impressive views of the city. Many people now live on the slopes of Ancon Hill and they would not choose to live anywhere else. Come find out why!
