The Spanish air carrier, Iberia, has signed an agreement with Panama’s tourism ministry, ATP. Starting in October of this year Iberia will have five round trip flights a week from Madrid to Panama’s Tocumen International Airport.
The agreement involves a 4 million dollar overall investment in order to develop, advertise, and maintain the route. Each party will spend $370,000 just on promotion of the route.
In the last year 30,845 Spaniards visited Panama which was a twenty percent increase over 2009. In January of 2011 Iberia merged with British Airways.
As a result of this merger travelers from Panama will be able to continue through Madrid on either Iberia or British Airways to such destinations as Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Doha, Bahrain, Muscat, Cape Town and Johannesburg as part of Iberia’s code sharing with British Airways. Also British Airways travelers will be able to take advantage of continuation flights with Iberia to such destinations as Havana and Iberia’s Panama to Johannesburg route.
On a related note ATP is talking to KLM about increasing its flights from Amsterdam to Panama.
