Bocas del Toro Panama an animal lover’s sanctuary

Bocas del Toro is a paradise for the animal lover. The scenery is magnificent year-round.  If you get close enough, you can enjoy the company of many of nature’s most beloved creatures.

Just south of Isla Colon, in Cristobal Island, is Dolphin Bay. Bottlenose dolphins breed here. These lovable creatures will come out to say hi when there is not too much tour boat activity. If you are willing to be a little adventurous, rent a kayak for this outing, or plan to go at a time of day when the bay is not crowded.

Swan Cay, a designated bird sanctuary, is the only known nesting place for Red-billed Tropic Bird in the Caribbean. It is a short boat ride from Isla Colon. The Cay also serves as home for brown boobys, brown pelicans, frigates and many types of gulls and terns. You cannot disembark in Swan Cay.  Ask your tour guide to get as close as possible to appreciate its splendor.

Bocas del Toro waters are frequented also by four species of marine turtles: Leatherback, Hawksbill, Green and Loggerhead. If you visit during nesting season and camp out on the appropriate beach, you might catch them nesting.

You can enjoy the diverse marine life by snorkeling or scuba diving along Bocas del Toro unspoiled coral reefs. Caribbean reef fish that can be commonly seen include the Sergeant Major, Green Moray, Gray Angelfish, and several different species of Damselfish and Parrotfish. Several types of marine invertebrates can be found including the sea anemone, long-spined sea urchin, sea star, leafy stinging coral, bristle worm, and tube sponge.
