Bocas del Toro’s Isla Bastimentos, a paradise for nature lovers

Isla Bastimentos, the second largest island of the archipelago of Bocas del Toro, is a popular destination for snorkeling and diving and is home to the National Marine Park of Isla Bastimentos.

The park protects its tropical forests, coral reefs and includes two small islands surrounded by white sand.

Hotels in Isla Bastimentos are more isolated than in Isla Colon (the main island) and are a good option for those looking to stay closer to the natural attractions the island offers. There are many beaches in Isla Bastimentos. That are worth mentioning Wizard Beach or First Beach, popular for surfing for beginners because of their small waves and no rocks, and Second Beach. Red Frog Beach is also in Bastimentos Island, but the construction of a luxury hotel is threatening to alter the landscape forever.

In addition to the recent population of immigrants who have built their waterfront property in recent years, there is a rich mix of inhabitants, which vary both in race and in purchasing power. The village of Bastimentos Island is the only one in the island and the second largest in Bocas del Toro, is very poor and has a community of about 200 people, mostly Creole (descendants of workers in banana plantations). Caution should be exercised when walking in the village of Isla Bastimentos night, but for the brave reward in Roots, where is said to serve the best Creole food in Bocas del Toro. Ngobe-Bugle Indians also have two communities in Isla Bastimentos.
