Civil aviation authorities in Panama and Mexico signed a bilateral aviation agreement in early August of 2011 to expand and add new routes and commercial aviation frequencies for the benefit of both countries.

After Mexicana filed for bankruptcy, the route between Panama and Mexico was covered only by the Panamanian airline Copa Airlines.

For Aeromexico this treaty is an opportunity that they will take advantage. Aeromexico airline announced that it will begin flying to Panama in the first quarter of 2012. Aeromexico ideally would have liked to start the route in the last quarter of this year, but is still licensing permits with the authorities of both countries.

The flights between the cities will include: 28 weekly flights to Mexico City, 35 weekly flights to Cancun, 7 weekly flights to Guadalajara, 7 weekly flights to Monterrey, 7 new frequencies to Puerto Vallarta and 7 to San Jose de Los Cabos in Baja California.
